Ask people where Bollywood gets married and they will say Italy. In practice, the industry has cycled through four or five very different kinds of venue over the last decade, and the choice usually tells you more about the couple than the guest list does.

The Rajasthan palace wedding

Udaipur and Jodhpur have been the default for the big-budget, big-guest-list wedding for years. Lake-facing palaces, hundreds of rooms, and infrastructure built for exactly this. The trade-off is that privacy is hard: a palace wedding is visible from half the city.

The Alibaug or Karjat farmhouse

Close enough to Mumbai for guests to drive, private enough to control who sees what. This has become the go-to for couples who want a small ceremony and one big party rather than a five-day event.

The overseas wedding

Tuscany, Lake Como and Sardinia had a long run. The appeal is total control over access; the cost is that most of your extended family cannot realistically come. Newer Indian destination logistics have pushed some couples back home.

The home wedding

The quietest trend, and arguably the strongest one. Several high-profile couples have married at home or in a family building with a registrar, then thrown a reception weeks later. It is cheaper, harder to leak, and reads as more genuine.

The temple or gurdwara ceremony

Small, traditional, and usually followed by a party. Popular with couples who want the ritual to be the actual event rather than a photo opportunity.
