Omi Vaidya's Appeal For Sonam Wangchuk Wins Internet — Gossip on Bollybakar

Chatur Ramalingam is trending again, and this time it has nothing to do with "all izz well." Omi Vaidya''s emotional video in support of Sonam Wangchuk''s hunger strike has taken over social media, with fans praising the actor for standing up while questioning why Aamir Khan has stayed silent.

Fourteen years after 3 Idiots turned Chatur Ramalingam into one of Bollywood''s most quoted characters, actor Omi Vaidya is trending for a completely different reason. On Tuesday, July 14, Vaidya shared an emotional video appeal on Instagram in support of Sonam Wangchuk, the Ladakh based engineer, innovator and climate activist who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi''s Jantar Mantar. The video has since gone massively viral, with fans calling it one of the most genuine celebrity interventions they have seen in recent memory.

The appeal has struck a nerve for a very specific reason. Sonam Wangchuk is widely believed to be the real life inspiration behind Phunsukh Wangdu, the character Aamir Khan played in 3 Idiots. Omi Vaidya played Chatur, Wangdu and Rancho''s rival turned friend in the film. So when the actor who played the comic antagonist steps up to defend the real man behind the film''s hero, while the actor who played the hero himself stays quiet, the internet was always going to have something to say.

What Did Omi Vaidya Actually Say

In the now viral video, Omi Vaidya opens with a line straight out of the film''s universe. "Hello idiots, pehchana? This is Omi Vaidya, Chatur from 3 Idiots and Sadiq from The Office, and I have an important message for you. I don''t really do this very often, so please listen up."

He then delivers the line that has become the headline of this entire story: "I don''t want Phunsukh Wangdu to die."

Vaidya goes on to explain the connection for anyone who may not know it. He reminds viewers that Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots is based on a real Ladakhi engineer, innovator, educator and reformer named Sonam Wangchuk, and mentions that he has personally met him and found him to be a genuinely interesting person.

The actor then turns serious, expressing concern that Wangchuk''s condition may not be getting the attention it deserves. He points out that Wangchuk''s blood sugar has dropped significantly during the fast and questions whether mainstream media is covering the situation adequately. He describes Wangchuk as raising issues around education, Ladakh''s autonomy and the environment, and closes with a plea that transcends politics: "Whether you agree with him or not, I don''t really want this guy to die. I think he''s a pretty impressive person and I would like for him to live."

It is a short video, but the sincerity in it is what appears to have connected with viewers far beyond the usual Bollywood fan circles.

Sonam Wangchuk''s Hunger Strike: What Is Actually Happening

To understand why Omi Vaidya''s video hit so hard, it helps to understand what Sonam Wangchuk is actually protesting. Wangchuk joined the Cockroach Janta Party''s demonstration at Jantar Mantar on June 28 and has been on an indefinite hunger strike since. As of Tuesday, July 14, the fast has entered its 17th day, while the broader Cockroach Janta Party agitation has crossed the 24 day mark.

The protest centres on allegations of irregularities in the NEET 2026 examination, with the Cockroach Janta Party demanding accountability and, according to several reports, the resignation of the Union Education Minister. Reports from the protest site say Wangchuk has lost close to 8 to 9 kilograms since starting the fast, with his blood pressure and blood sugar levels being closely monitored by doctors on site.

Sonam Wangchuk is not new to this kind of activism. He is the founder of SECMOL, the Students'' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh, and is known worldwide as the inventor of the ice stupa, an artificial glacier technique that helps conserve water in cold desert regions like Ladakh. He has spent decades pushing for educational reform, environmental protection and greater autonomy for Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. His earlier hunger strikes and marches on similar issues have made headlines before, but this one, coming amid the NEET 2026 controversy, has taken on a much larger political dimension.

The Cockroach Janta Party''s protest has already drawn support from leaders across party lines. TMC MP Mahua Moitra has publicly appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast while continuing the larger movement. A delegation from AAP led by former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has visited the protest site, and Shiv Sena UBT chief Uddhav Thackeray along with CPI(M) MP Amra Ram have also extended their support. The Cockroach Janta Party has announced a planned march to Parliament on July 20, timed with the start of the Monsoon Session, keeping the pressure on the government to respond.

Why "What Rancho Couldn''t Do, Chatur Did" Is Trending

The comparison being drawn online is not subtle, and that is exactly why it is working. Aamir Khan''s Rancho, or Phunsukh Wangdu, is remembered as the film''s moral centre, the free thinker who challenged a broken education system and inspired an entire generation to chase excellence over grades. Chatur, played by Omi Vaidya, was written as the opposite, the rule follower obsessed with rank and results, the character audiences loved to laugh at rather than root for.

So when it was Chatur, not Rancho, who stepped up in real life to defend the real Phunsukh Wangdu, the irony was too perfect for social media to ignore. Comments like "what Rancho couldn''t do, Chatur did" and "the silencer just did what the hero should have" began flooding timelines within hours of the video going up.

Much of the online conversation has since shifted from praising Omi Vaidya to questioning Aamir Khan''s silence. Social media users have pointed out that Aamir Khan built a career defining moment on a character inspired by Wangchuk''s real life work, yet has not issued a single public statement about the hunger strike. Comments circulating widely include lines such as "it''s easy to make a drama out of someone''s life, but it''s difficult to stand up for their real life, where is Aamir Khan today," and "he helped you, now it''s your time to help him." As of now, Aamir Khan has made no public comment on Wangchuk''s hunger strike and has not responded to the growing number of posts urging him to speak up.

Adding further weight to the moment, activist and lawyer Prashant Bhushan reshared Omi Vaidya''s video on X, writing that at least one character from Aamir Khan''s 3 Idiots has come out in support of Sonam Wangchuk, the man who inspired the film''s central character, and questioned what Aamir Khan himself plans to do about it.

Actor Zeenat Aman also lent her voice to the moment, writing that her thoughts were with the capital as Wangchuk entered the 17th day of his fast. She referenced reports that he has started losing muscle mass and is in immense pain, and quoted his response when asked to end the fast, where he reportedly said the government should be asked why it will not even hold a dialogue rather than asking him to stop his protest. Aman went on to describe Wangchuk as the founder of SECMOL, the inventor of the ice stupa, a reformer of Ladakh''s education system, and the inspiration behind the beloved Phunsukh Wangdu character.

The 3 Idiots Connection That Refuses To Fade

It says something about the staying power of 3 Idiots that a film released in 2009 is still shaping real world conversations in 2026. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi and Kareena Kapoor, the film followed two friends searching for their missing college companion Rancho, only to discover he was actually the celebrated inventor Phunsukh Wangdu all along. The movie became a cultural phenomenon for its sharp critique of India''s rote learning education system and its message that curiosity and passion matter more than blind competition for marks.

Omi Vaidya''s Chatur, best remembered for his mangled Hindi speech and the "balaatkar" wedding toast scene, became one of the most quotable comic characters in Hindi cinema. That the actor behind this comic relief character is the one showing up for the real life Wangdu, at a moment when his health is reportedly deteriorating, has added an emotional layer that few expected from a film this old.

For a generation that grew up quoting 3 Idiots dialogues, watching its characters intersect with a real and ongoing protest movement feels less like nostalgia and more like the film''s message finally playing out in real life. Cockroach Janta Party And The NEET 2026 Row Explained

For readers unfamiliar with the Cockroach Janta Party, it has emerged as one of the more talked about protest platforms in recent weeks, built around the demand for accountability in the conduct of NEET 2026. Allegations of paper leaks and irregularities in the medical entrance exam sparked widespread anger among students and parents, and the movement gathered pace once Sonam Wangchuk lent his support and eventually his own body to the cause through an indefinite hunger strike.

The demand at the centre of the protest is the resignation of the Union Education Minister over the alleged mishandling of the exam process. With cross party political support building and a march to Parliament planned for July 20, the protest shows no signs of slowing down, and Wangchuk''s deteriorating health has only intensified public attention on the issue.

Internet Reactions Continue To Pour In

Since the video was posted, it has been shared widely across Instagram, X and other platforms, with fans and film watchers weighing in from every angle. Many are praising Omi Vaidya for using his platform responsibly, calling it a rare instance of a celebrity speaking up on a health and human rights issue rather than staying neutral for the sake of brand safety. Others are using the moment to revisit the broader question of celebrity responsibility in India, asking why more actors who have built careers on socially conscious films rarely extend that consciousness into real activism.

The comparison to Rancho and Chatur has become something of a meme format in itself, with users creating side by side posts of the two characters and captioning them with variations of the same joke, that the sincere hero stayed silent while the comic sidekick showed up when it mattered. What Happens Next

As Sonam Wangchuk''s hunger strike stretches into its 18th day and beyond, the pressure on both the government and public figures to respond is only expected to grow. With the Cockroach Janta Party''s Parliament march scheduled for July 20 and political leaders across the spectrum weighing in, the story is unlikely to fade from headlines anytime soon.

Whether Aamir Khan eventually breaks his silence remains to be seen. For now, it is Omi Vaidya''s heartfelt, unscripted appeal that has captured the internet''s attention, proving once again that sometimes the most memorable moments come not from the hero of the story, but from the one everyone least expected.

This is a developing story and will be updated as Sonam Wangchuk''s hunger strike and the Cockroach Janta Party protest continue to unfold.
