Best Bollywood Thriller Movies You Can't Predict
The Hindi thrillers that actually earn their twists, from Andhadhun and Kahaani to Talvar and Badla, with what makes each one work.

The Hindi thriller had a difficult 1990s and a very good last fifteen years. What changed was patience — filmmakers stopped explaining the twist in a flashback montage and started trusting the audience to keep up. These are the ones that hold up on a second watch, which is the only real test of the genre.
Andhadhun (2018)
Sriram Raghavan's film about a pianist pretending to be blind is the best Hindi thriller of the modern era, and it is also frequently very funny. Ayushmann Khurrana and Tabu are both excellent, and the ending is still being argued about. It won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film.
Kahaani (2012)
Sujoy Ghosh shot Kolkata during Durga Puja and used the crowds as camouflage. Vidya Balan carries it entirely. The reveal works because the film spends two hours making you assume something reasonable.
Drishyam (2015)
A remake of the Malayalam original, and one of the rare Hindi remakes that justifies itself. Ajay Devgn plays an ordinary man solving an extraordinary problem with nothing but movie knowledge and stubbornness. Tabu, again, on the other side.
Talvar (2015)
Meghna Gulzar's film about the Noida double murder case is structured as three competing versions of the same events. It is less interested in the twist than in how investigations get built backwards from a conclusion.
Badla (2019)
Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu, mostly in one room. An official remake of the Spanish film Contratiempo. Tight, contained, and it never cheats.
Ugly (2013)
Anurag Kashyap's missing-child film is the bleakest entry here and the hardest to shake off. Not a comfortable watch; an extremely good one.
A Wednesday (2008)
Neeraj Pandey's debut, Naseeruddin Shah versus Anupam Kher across a single afternoon. The premise is simple and the execution is airtight.
Johnny Gaddaar (2007)
Raghavan's earlier film, a pulp heist thriller that wears its love of 1970s cinema openly. Neil Nitin Mukesh has never been better used.
Newer picks worth your time
- Merry Christmas (2024) — Raghavan with Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, patient and strange.
- Kohrra and Delhi Crime — the best procedural work in Hindi is on streaming now.
- Raat Akeli Hai (2020) — Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a locked-house murder mystery.
- Andhera-adjacent horror-thrillers — Tumbbad (2018) is technically folk horror but plays like a thriller and looks better than almost anything else here.
What separates a good twist from a cheap one
The rule the strong films follow: the information was always on screen. Andhadhun, Kahaani and Drishyam all reward a rewatch because the clues were placed honestly. The weak ones withhold a fact from the audience and call the withholding a twist. Once you notice the difference you cannot un-notice it.
