Bollywood Horror Movies That Actually Scare You
From Raat and Bhoot to Tumbbad and Stree, here are the Bollywood horror movies worth watching at night — and what makes each one work.

Hindi horror spent years being written off as a genre of creaky doors and loud background music. Then a handful of films proved the audience was never the problem — the writing was. Below is a watchlist built around films that hold up, sorted by the kind of fear they trade in.
The atmosphere films
Tumbbad (2018) — Rahi Anil Barve's period folk-horror about greed, a cursed treasure and endless monsoon rain. Visually it is the most confident Hindi horror film of the last decade, and it works even if you do not scare easily.
Bulbbul (2020) — Anvita Dutt's Netflix film uses a red-tinted Bengal estate and a chudail legend to tell a story about violence against women. More dread than jump scares.
Pari (2018) — Anushka Sharma produced and starred in this bleak, grimy supernatural drama. Not a crowd-pleaser, which is exactly why it lingers.
The classics that started it
Mahal (1949) — the reincarnation ghost story that gave Hindi cinema its haunted-mansion template, and Lata Mangeshkar her breakout song.
Raat (1992) — Ram Gopal Varma's possession film, still the tightest scare-per-minute Hindi horror ever made.
Bhoot (2003) — Varma again, this time in a Mumbai high-rise with Urmila Matondkar delivering a genuinely unnerving performance.
1920 (2008) — Vikram Bhatt's exorcism drama, the film that launched a whole franchise of sequels.
The horror-comedy wave
Maddock's horror universe changed what a Hindi horror release looks like commercially. Stree (2018) took a Karnataka urban legend and turned it into a comedy with real scares; Bhediya (2022) moved the idea to Arunachal Pradesh with a werewolf; Munjya (2024) and Stree 2 (2024) kept the run going, with Stree 2 becoming one of the biggest Hindi hits of its year.
Where to start
If you want one film: Tumbbad. If you want to watch with friends: Stree. If you want to be genuinely unable to sleep: Raat.
