Karan Johar’s Chand Mera Dil First Look Sparks Nostalgia for Bollywood’s College Romance Era — Gossip on Bollybakar

Ananya Panday and Lakshya are headed to college, Karan Johar is back in full romantic producer mode, and honestly the first look of Chand Mera Dil has the internet feeling things it has not felt in a while. Here is everything you need to know, plus a trip down memory lane to the Bollywood college romances that started it all.

Karan Johar Just Dropped the First Look of Chand Mera Dil and We Are Already Invested

Today, April 6, Karan Johar took to Instagram to unveil a carousel of six posters from the upcoming romantic drama Chand Mera Dil, and if the visuals are anything to go by, Bollywood's classic college romance era is about to get a shiny, emotionally loaded reboot. Directed by Vivek Soni of Meenakshi Sundareshwar fame and produced under the Dharma Productions banner, the film stars Ananya Panday and Lakshya as Chandni and Aarav, a couple whose love story is as much about growing pains as it is about stolen glances in a classroom.

Karan's caption said it best: "A love story where life happens faster than love." And the posters deliver exactly that energy. One image has the two sitting on a bed in quiet conversation, another captures them in a classroom, and one particularly talked-about frame shows Ananya in Lakshya's shirt while he walks bare-chested beside her. The copy on the posters reads like a coming-of-age poem: "Falling in love is easy, growing up is not" and "When life changes the syllabus." Someone at Dharma is clearly earning their salary this week.

This is the first time Ananya and Lakshya are being paired on screen together. Lakshya, who stunned audiences with the raw action of Kill in 2023, is now being handed a full-fledged romantic lead, and fans are genuinely curious to see if that transition lands. Ananya, meanwhile, has been having quite the run — from Kesari Chapter 2 to Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri with Kartik Aaryan, she seems to be settling into a confident groove that suits her.

The teaser drops tomorrow, April 7, so the waiting game is almost over.

One small wrinkle in all this romance: the film is releasing on May 22, 2026, which puts it on a direct collision course with Bobby Deol's Bandar. A college love story versus whatever chaos Bobby Deol is cooking up — that is a box office matchup nobody saw coming and everyone will be watching.

This Poster Has Us Missing the Golden Age of Bollywood College Romance

There is something about that classroom image in the Chand Mera Dil posters that hits different. It instantly transports you to a specific era of Hindi cinema when the college campus was practically a character in itself, and no love story felt complete without a canteen scene, a ragging montage and at least one scene where the hero waits outside the ladies hostel with flowers.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) basically invented the blueprint. Karan Johar, in his directorial debut, turned a fictional college into an emotional universe where white outfits, basketball courts and best friendships came together to create one of the most rewatched films in Indian cinema history. Rahul and Anjali running around that campus while "Koi Mil Gaya" played was a fever dream that an entire generation grew up inside. The fact that Karan is now producing Chand Mera Dil with the same campus energy feels very much like a full circle moment.

Then came Dil Chahta Hai (2001), which completely flipped the script. Farhan Akhtar's debut was less about romance and more about the terrifying end of college, that particular grief of watching your best years quietly close behind you. The Goa trip, the arguments, the growing apart and the growing back together — it was the first Bollywood film that made young adults feel truly seen. No one who was in college at the time has ever fully recovered from it.

Rang De Basanti (2006) took the college experience and injected it with ideology, nostalgia and tragedy. A group of friends goofing through their university days, slowly radicalized by history and grief. It was the rare Bollywood film where the college scenes felt simultaneously the most joyful and the most heartbreaking, because you knew what was coming.

And of course 3 Idiots (2009), which remains possibly the most quoted film among Indian millennials, turned the pressure-cooker engineering college into a site of both rebellion and deep emotional reckoning. Aamir Khan playing a rule-breaking genius in a system rigged against joy? Legitimately changed how a generation thought about education and ambition.

Can Chand Mera Dil Join That List?

The posters suggest that Chand Mera Dil understands what makes a college love story work: it is never just about the romance.

The best ones are about time, about how fast youth moves and how unprepared everyone is for it to end. "When life changes the syllabus" is a line that could easily have come from a Gulzar poem, and the fact that Vivek Soni, who has already proven his emotional range with Meenakshi Sundareshwar, is directing this gives real reason for optimism.

The teaser tomorrow will tell us more. But for now, Chandni and Aarav are already living rent-free in everyone's head, and that is a very good start. 🎓💛
